The image of Muhammad is based on a 1458 Persian miniature; “Muhammad’s night journey to heaven on his mount, Buraq”. The horse-like creature, similar to a sphinx or centaur with wings and a human head, is a popular theme of Islamic painting. The story of the night journey (miraj) looks back to such ancient oriental and Biblical themes as Jacob’s vision of the ladder to heaven (Genesis 28, 10-22).
In this present context, the physical portrayal of the icon of Muhammad on a suitcase brings attention to the issue of visual representation of the “sacred”, in a particularly turbulent and paranoia-driven news media coverage of Islamic versus “Western” morals.
